Solar Eclipse Shadows

Just wanted to share my photos of shadows from the solar eclipse!  And I recently finished a few books, including ‘How to Be a Christian in College’ and ‘Stepping Heavenward’.  I hope these quotes encourage you as they did me.

I have seen the nakedness and the emptiness, and I have seen the beauty and sweetness of life.’

-E. Prentiss, Stepping Heavenward

‘I am afraid that you are in danger of falling into an error only too common among young Christians.  You acknowledge that there has been enmity toward God in your secret soul and that one of the first steps toward peace is to become reconciled to Him and to have your sins forgiven for Christ’s sake.  This done, you settle down with the feeling that the great work of life is done and that your salvation is sure.  Or, if not sure, that your whole business is to study your own case to see whether you are really in a state of grace.  Many persons never get beyond this point.  They spend their whole time in asking the question:

Do I love the Lord or no? Am I His or am I not?

I beg you, my dear child, if you are doing this aimless, useless work, to stop short at once.  Life is too precious to spend in a treadmill.   Having been pardoned by your God and Savior, the next thing you have to do is to show your gratitude for this infinite favor by consecrating your self entirely to Him, body, soul, and spirit…’

– E. Prentiss, Stepping Heavenward

I love Him so!  I love Him so!  And I am so astonished that we are restive under His unerring hand!’

-E. Prentiss, Stepping Heavenward

I am a wayward, foolish child.  But He loves me!  I have disobeyed and grieved Him ten thousand times.  But He loves me!  I have lost faith in some of my dearest friends and am very desolate.  But He loves me!  I do not love Him; I am even angry with Him!  But He loves me!’

-E. Prentiss, Stepping Heavenward

Have you noticed that many people dislike discussing heaven?  Are you one of them?  I used to be.  I thought it was selfish to want to go there.  But it’s not selfish; we want to go there because God made us that way.  Heaven is our True Country – our Home.  Do you think it’s silly to think much about Heaven when there’s so much to think about in this life?  It’s not silly; we’ll be there much longer than here.  Eighty or ninety years doesn’t seem like much next to eternity.  Do you think it’s naïve to hope for heaven because we’re merely believing what we want to believe? It’s not naïve; having come to know God, we’ve learned that His promises can be trusted.  The atheist is the one who believes what he wants to believe, for he wants God and heaven not to exist.  Do you think it’s cheap to serve God in the hope of heaven when we ought to be serving Him for His own sake?  It’s not cheap; serving God in the hope of heaven is serving Him for His own sake because enjoying heaven means enjoying Him… Let’s give way to the hope of heaven.’

-J. Budziszewski, ‘How To Be A Christian In College
