I’ve Been To The Mountaintop

April 3rd, 1968, in Memphis Tennessee – Text and info taken from American Rhetoric.com http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkivebeentothemountaintop.htm, copyright 2001-present:

‘Well, I don’t know what will happen now.  We’ve got some difficult days ahead.  But it doesn’t really matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop.

And I don’t mind.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life.  Longevity has its place.  But I’m not concerned about that now.  I just want to do God’s will.  And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain.  And I’ve looked over.  And I’ve seen the promised land.  I may not get there with you.  But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!

And I’m so happy, tonight.

I’m not worried about anything.

I’m not fearing any man!

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!’

Martin Luther King Jr.

My Promised Land

There was a desert spread before me,

         where no good thing could grow;

but He took my hand and told me

“with you, child, I will go.”

I could not see a way

through the hot and scorching sand,

but He shaded my path with heavenly wings

towards the Promised Land.

There was a stormy river

with no bridge that I could see

but He held my hand securely

and said, “Come, follow me.”

I could not see a way

across the river’s rainy span,

but He parted the waters as we went forward

towards the Promised Land.

There was a blazing fire

ready to consume my soul.

But He said, “It shall not touch you;

not one single coal.”

I could not see a way

through the heat I could not stand,

but He brought me safely through flames

towards the Promised Land.

There was a sudden grief

a tragedy I could not alter.

Here I wept and here, I admit

that yes, I did falter.

I could not see a way

through the night of loss I had not planned.

But He picked me up and cradled me

as we went on to the Promised Land.

There came the river Jordan

which marked the end of life.

A gate stood on the farther shore and between,

lay all my sin and strife.

I could see a way, though; the river now

bridged over by the scars on His hands.

And because He held my heart securely

He led me, singing, to the Promised Land.

-By Shannon Morris

But now, this is what the Lord says – he who created you,  O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” ‘

Isaiah 43:1-3a

      1. Yes, I am. I really, really enjoyed myself and hope you did too. 🙂 I have been painting one of our rooms yellow! Oh, and I am really enjoying listening to your song by Handel that you linked to in another of your posts. It’s great!

        1. I’m so glad you enjoyed the song by Handel – I thought you might like it! I have been trying to listen to more classical music lately; it is so relaxing. A yellow room sounds so cute! Which room is it?
